In China, Wu Lou/Hu Lu Gourd has long been a symbol of "fourtune and prosperity", representing blessings and protection. We combine them with the Chinese zodiac, endowing each piece with a unique guardian meaning. Each zodiac gourd is hand-carved by Teochew woodcarving artisans. Through warm wood and exquisite craftsmanship, it conveys traditional culture and heartfelt blessings, turning intangible cultural heritage into daily life as a portable talisman.
The zodiac Gourd is not merely an artistic ornament but also a protective symbol in daily life:
- Placed on desks or bookshelves, it adds cultural charm;
- Hung in cars or homes, it signifies warding off evil and attracting good fortune;
- Carried with you, it becomes your personal zodiac guardian and blessing;
- Given as a gift to friends and family, it carries well wishes and heartfelt sentiments.
In traditional Chinese culture, auspicious patterns often combine natural imagery with symbolic meanings, embodying both prayers for blessings and the intention to offer protection:
The continuous vine represents family flourishing and a house full of descendants. The gourd symbolizes both fortune and prosperity, signifying happiness and smooth sailing. In Chinese, the word for ‘gourd’ (húlu) is a homophone for ‘guarding the trip,’ conveying good wishes for safe travels. Folk belief also holds that gourds ward off evil spirits and disasters, bringing spiritual comfort to daily life.
Xiangyun/Auspicious clouds Symbolizing joyous harmony and good fortune, they are often combined with traditional auspicious meanings such as “fu” (happiness) and “lu” (prosperity), to form comprehensive blessings like "Five luck/blessing", "Fourtune, wealth, longevity, happiness, property".Each zodiac animal paired with a Xiangyun/Auspicious clouds embodies a unique protective meaning

Sichuan peach wood: Also known for "dragon-subduing wood” or “ghost-repelling wood,” peach wood has been used since ancient times to ward off evil spirits, subdue ghosts, protect homes, and avert disasters. Historically, it was used to make protective charms. According to legend, the divine tree that Kua Fu threw when he was dying turned into a peach forest, symbolizing protection and divine power. Its resilient texture is not only suitable for intricate carving but also imbues each gourd with unique cultural and spiritual significance.
Each piece is meticulously crafted using traditional Teochew woodcarving techniques:
First, the Sichuan peach wood is sawn into long rectangular pieces;
Then, the basic shape of the gourd is carved out through machine engraving;
Next, skilled artisans hand-carve the vines, xiangyun, and chinese zodiac motifs; the pieces are carefully polished, oiled, and waxed;
Finally, holes are drilled and strings are inserted.
By combining the accuracy of machine carving with the delicacy and creativity of handwork, each gourd embodies both artistic value and rich cultural significance.
